6 years ago my wife and I visited Israel. The purpose of the visit was to visit the grave of her Father who was killed in the final weeks of the war and is buried in a British war cemetery near Jerusalem. We also wanted to find out the circumstances of his death. She never knew him.

Part of my childhood was spent in Africa in the Gambia. In 1947 my parents restarted a medical research station which had closed during the war. A little known fact was that it was used by the Germans in the Second World War to land injured seamen. The country was also the centre of the Slave trade as it was a narrow country on both banks of the Gambia River. Thus it was easy to capture and ship slaves. The book Roots was based on the Gambia.
